Flats plan could change face of run-down site
Major scheme put forward for Kwik Save area
Gloucester’s derelict Kwik Save site could soon be razed if multi-million pound development plans are given the go-ahead. A major housing scheme for Black Dog Way, Northgate Street and Worcester Street has been submitted to Gloucester City Council for planning approval.
The 98-home development would predominantly face onto Black Dog Way and would include a mix of one, two and three-bed apartments, four shop premises, new footpaths and 81 car parking spaces. The run-down Kwik Save site, which has been empty since the supermarket moved out in the summer of 2002, would be demolished to make way for the scheme.
A previous application for 84 apartments at the site was given the go-ahead by city planners in Spring 2005 but did not come to fruition. But Newland Homes, which has drawn up the new scheme, says this did not reflect the merits of the site.
Peter Hayes, who is part of the design team at Newland, said it was hopeful of getting backing from the council. He said: “We have come up with this scheme by drawing on what Gloucester has and what Gloucester is all about. The previous design did not do that.
“We have made the most of the site’s potential and the first thing we need to do is to get rid of the Kwik Save building – something people in Gloucester have been asking for. This will make a huge difference to this corner of the city and we are very excited about it.”
The plans are based on a modern design, but Newland says the apartments will be in keeping with the rest of the city.
