Climate considerate housebuilder, Newland Homes, has officially opened its latest development on Station Road called Heron Rise, helped by Mayor Sheila Kimmins and town and county councillors who came together to mark the occasion.
Construction started at the end of last year on the 87 new homes, preceded by considerable groundworks to clear and level the brownfield site ready for its next chapter. The development provides a broad selection of quality, low carbon housing for Westbury, from two bedroom houses and apartments through to three and four bedroom homes, conveniently placed for easy access to Westbury train station.
Historically, the UK has some of the least energy efficient housing in Europe, which has an impact on both energy consumption and carbon emissions. The term ‘climate considerate’ encapsulates Newland Homes’ approach to building homes sustainably, be it through conserving heat by maximising airtightness and insulation, or encouraging biodiversity through introducing RHS approved, bee-friendly planting schemes and hedgehog highways which enable hedgehogs to move freely in order to find food. Over 560 metres of hedgehog highways are being installed at Heron Rise.

Just 15 homes have been released in the first phase of development at Heron Rise. Many of the properties are eligible for the Help to Buy Equity Loan Scheme, which is a Government-backed scheme that lends first time buyers up to 20% of the cost of a new build home, interest free for the first five years. For example, a three double bedroomed semi-detached home with sumptuous principal bedroom suite occupying an entire floor, with walk in wardrobe and galleried landing, is eligible for inclusion within the Help to Buy scheme, which comes to an end in March 2023.
With changes to working life, a work from home space and pre-installed fibre broadband provision has been designed and included for each property. Prices start from £250,000 at Heron Rise, with three bed properties available from £349,000.
Furthermore, 10 affordable properties will be provided by Selwood Housing Association, six of which are available for affordable rent and four for shared ownership. The ten properties include a mix of one and two bedroom apartments as well as two and three bedroom houses.
Newland Homes is returning to Westbury for the first time in twenty years with Heron Rise, although the Gloucestershire-based company has a long association with Wiltshire. Newland Homes has been the recipient of the Trowbridge Town Enhancement Award for an unprecedented three times for its work in transforming and enhancing the local community and its latest development in the county, Newland Place on Bradley Road in Trowbridge, was commended by Wiltshire Council’s Urban Designer, who recognised Newland Homes’ efforts to ‘design an exemplar scheme’ for the town.
Newland Homes was also the first traditional housebuilder in the UK to sign the United Nations Climate Neutral Now Pledge, which is a commitment to measure greenhouse gas emissions, implement means to reduce them, to consider offsetting and to report progress annually. It is on course to achieve at least a 50% reduction in its company carbon footprint by the end of 2024, and furthermore, it is retrospectively carbon neutral through offsetting.
