ARE BUNGALOWS HEADING FOR EXTINCTION?

Are bungalows heading for extinction?

Are bungalows heading for extinction?  The UK is facing a significant shortage of bungalows, with new build single-storey homes now on the “critically endangered list” according to the National House Building Council (NHBC).  Newland Homes is one of the few housebuilders taking proactive steps to include bungalows in its mix of new homes.

Although recent figures reveal that the number of bungalows under construction has reached an 80-year low, with only 228 bungalows registered to be built in the UK in the third quarter of 2023, five bungalows are being built in its latest collection of 24 zero carbon homes in the heart of Claverham, off Mayors Road.  Two of these have already been sold.

Surge in demand for bungalows

The current housing market is seeing a surge in demand for bungalows.  This is driven by a growing number of downsizers, retirees, growing families and those with mobility needs.  But very few housebuilders have stepped up to meet this challenge, preferring to prioritise houses due to greater land efficiency.

As the shortage of bungalows intensifies, potential purchasers are going to great lengths to secure their dream home.  After a three-year search and 22 handwritten notes through letterboxes, Jo and Andy Pennell managed to secure a three-bedroom bungalow by Newland Homes.

The couple downsized from a 2,500sq ft home to one that is just over 1,000sq ft.  “It’s been a challenge to downsize, but it’s also been incredibly freeing” says Jo.  “Life is a lot less cluttered as we physically have less.”

Having taken early retirement from demanding corporate jobs, the couple have carved out a life which many would envy.  “We are adventurous and feel the urge to explore new places.  We want to visit Japan next, to experience as much as possible” explains Jo.

“Our previous home was maintenance hungry with a big garden” continues Andy.  “It also took a fair bit of heating.  We always worried about our old house when we were away.  Now, we don’t have to worry.”

Bungalows are a key part of our housing mix

“Bungalows are a key part of our housing mix because we understand how crucial they are for easy, adaptable and lock-up-and-leave living” says Marcus Evans, Sales & Marketing Director for Newland Homes.  “As people look for flexible, future-proofed homes, bungalows offer a solution to an underserved part of the market.”

With bungalows priced from £475,000 at The North Field, Court de Wyck, these combine cutting-edge environmental design with the charm of a picturesque village setting. The development features a mix of two and three-bedroom detached bungalows, along with three and four-bedroom detached houses.  In a significant shift towards providing zero carbon homes, each property is also powered with renewable energy.  This includes solar PV, an air source heat pump with underfloor heating to the ground floor, EV charging point and advanced insulation to achieve zero carbon living.  The homes are EPC ‘A’ rated for both environmental impact and energy efficiency, meaning lower running costs.

Marcus continues: “With bungalows facing such a shortage in the UK, a zero carbon bungalow must be an even rarer breed!”
