Growing demand for bungalows prompts specialist housing event in Banwell. A growing shortage of bungalows, coupled with North Somerset’s older population, is prompting more homeowners to think ahead about where they want to live in later life, according to our research.
To help local residents explore their options, we are hosting a dedicated ‘rightsizing’ event at our Day’s Rise development in Banwell on Saturday 10 October 2026.
Demand for single-storey homes continues to rise
The event comes as demand for single-storey homes continues to rise. Research by the HomeOwners Alliance found that 38% of homeowners aged 55 and over would choose a bungalow for their next move. However, bungalows now account for just 1% of new homes being built in the UK, compared to 11% in 1990, creating a significant mismatch between supply and demand.
At the same time, people in North Somerset are living longer. Council data shows that the number of North Somerset residents aged 65 and over is projected to increase by 15,000 people by 2040. The area already has a higher proportion of residents aged 65 and over than the national average, with older residents accounting for 24% of the population compared with 19% across England.
Local homeowners invited to attend special ‘rightsizing’ event
In response, we are inviting local homeowners to attend a special ‘rightsizing’ event at Day’s Rise, where they will have access to independent specialists who can discuss a range of financial planning considerations, including equity release mortgages. Visitors will also be able to explore the zero carbon bungalows and houses available at the development and learn more about a limited time incentive package worth up to £20,000, with Newland Homes covering estate agency fees, removal costs and legal fees for eligible purchasers.
Marcus Evans, Sales & Marketing Director at Newland Homes, commented: “We’re seeing increasing interest from people who want to take control of their future housing needs. In a world that can often feel uncertain, many homeowners are looking for certainty in the things they can control. Where they live, how much their home costs to run and whether it will continue to meet their needs in the years ahead are all becoming increasingly important considerations.
“At Day’s Rise, buyers can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with a home designed for the future. Our zero carbon homes generate renewable energy, helping to shield homeowners from volatile energy prices while reducing their environmental impact. Rightsizing isn’t necessarily about moving to a smaller home, it’s about moving to a home that takes the pressure off you.”
