First look at striking new zero carbon homes in one of Cheltenham’s most sought-after areas. One of Cheltenham’s smaller housing schemes has been unveiled in Leckhampton, with just 13 zero carbon homes. New CGI images we’ve just released show a private development of architecturally designed homes on Kidnappers Lane, all powered by renewable technology.
The development, known as Cherringtons, centres around a collection of eight detached properties for sale. They will be accessed via a dedicated private road. The mix of three-bedroom bungalows and five-bedroom houses has been designed so each has its own look and feel. This will create a cohesive yet varied appearance across the development.
Design draws on barn-style architecture
Each home design draws on barn-style architecture, using materials such as stone, brick and Millboard cladding as a contemporary take on a farmstead. Black Millboard cladding has been selected for its timber-style finish. The use of recycled materials will support the development’s wider sustainability approach.
The homes are arranged as a small cluster, rather than a larger estate layout, reflecting the semi-rural character of the surrounding area of Leckhampton. Leckhampton is well known locally for its rural edge of town location. It has good access to schools, shops and facilities. Developments of this scale are a rarity and offer a more exclusive setting to that of larger developments locally.
Energy efficient zero carbon homes
Each of the new homes for sale has been designed to operate without gas. Instead using solar PV to generate electricity alongside air source heat pumps for heating and hot water, with enhanced insulation. We have extensive experience of delivering energy efficient zero carbon homes, having delivered our first fossil-fuel-free home in 2022.
Tom Sheppard, Design Director for Newland Homes comments: “The design of Cherringtons takes its cue from traditional farmsteads that have grown and evolved over time, creating a place that feels established and varied. This is coupled with a contemporary approach to living, with homes that are built to high energy standards and designed for the future, bringing together a sense of character with the performance of a modern home.”
A further five affordable homes, offering a mix of two and three-bedroom homes including bungalows, are being delivered with separate access from Kidnappers Lane. This represents a significant investment in providing affordable housing to help address the housing crisis in Cheltenham. A town where the identified housing need is almost three times higher than affordable housing delivery*.
New green spaces including a wildflower meadow will be created on site
As part of the wider plans, new green spaces will be created on site, including areas of planting and a wildflower meadow, along with sustainable drainage features designed to manage rainwater and support local biodiversity. Public open spaces will connect the new development to the existing green spaces of Leckhampton.
The site is positioned directly opposite our most recent development of zero carbon homes in Cheltenham, called Pear Trees, which is fully occupied and well established within the neighbourhood. Pear Trees was referenced by Max Wilkinson MP as an example of what developers should be doing to future-proof housing.
