ZERO CARBON BUNGALOWS SET FOR BANWELL AMID NATIONAL SHORTAGE

Zero carbon bungalows set for Banwell amid national shortage

Zero carbon bungalows set for Banwell amid national shortage.  While bungalow building has all but stalled nationwide, Banwell is seeing a welcome return of these increasingly scarce homes as work is about to start on new housing in the village.

Breaking ground on 37 zero carbon homes this summer

Newland Homes will be breaking ground on 37 zero carbon homes this summer.  65% of these homes will offer single storey living.  In turn providing much needed housing flexibility for the local community.

According to data just released from the National House Building Council (NHBC), the number of new bungalows built across the UK in 2024 was a miserly 1,285.  This marks an 11% decrease from previous years and representing just over 1% of all new home registrations.

Delivering these types of homes makes absolute sense

“This decline underscores the rarity of bungalows.  They are in short supply but there’s high demand” says Marcus Evans, Sales & Marketing Director for Newland Homes.  “We know there’s a strong appetite amongst older buyers and downsizers who want to stay in the area, but they also appeal to younger families.  Delivering these types of homes makes absolute sense, both commercially and in terms of community need.  They tend to sell extremely quickly” concludes Marcus.

Of the 37 new homes planned north of the High Street in Banwell, Newland Homes will be introducing 24 bungalows and chalet bungalows alongside traditional two-storey family homes.  Chalet bungalows are 1.5 storeys with at least one bedroom on the ground floor making them suitable for those who prefer limited stairs.  The upper floor contains extra bedrooms or office space, offering flexibility for growing families or guests.

11 of the 37 homes will be affordable homes for the local community, for those who can’t afford to buy or rent a home at standard market rates.  Five of these affordable homes will be bungalows.

High environmental standards and improved biodiversity

The new development ticks two rare boxes.  All the new homes will also be built to high environmental standards.  The government recently affirmed its commitment to net zero by pressing ahead with plans to make solar panels compulsory on all new build homes by 2027.  Newland Homes has been leading the way on this front for several years.  Since 2022, all of Newland Homes’ houses have been built with solar panels and air source heat pumps as standard, providing homeowners with energy-efficient, fossil fuel-free living from day one.

The development will also improve biodiversity by introducing ecological rich planting, landscape features and new habitats for local wildlife.  The homes have been designed in keeping with the character of Banwell village, with a variety of storey heights across the development to thoughtfully integrate into the landscape.

“This development has been a long time in the making” Marcus added.  “We’re keen to get started and are fully committed to being a considerate neighbour throughout the construction process and beyond.”
